5 Reasons to Rethink College

Since we were kids, we’ve been conditioned by our parents and our teachers to believe that college education is the most telling difference between a successful individual and one who struggles to pay the monthly bills.

While that story may have made sense at first, there are many college dropouts who have done wonders and have taken the world by storm. After all, the likes of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg never finished their college education, and they all went on to reshape the world.

This has led many young adults to wonder whether going to a college is, in fact, the best way to have a successful career. Join us as we explain why it’s high time for people to rethink college.

1. It’s Extremely Expensive

While baby boomers may have been able to afford a college education by working part-time jobs, it’s no secret that most millennials struggle to pay the college tuition fee. In fact, the financial situation of college students is so dire a Washington Post investigation showed student loan debt had increased to 60 trillion dollars!

2. Lack of Purpose

As discussed above, we’ve been told since our formative years that acquiring college education is the only sure-fire way of success. This has led many students to blindly pursue admissions at well-reputed colleges around the world.

As a result, most colleges are full of students who don’t even know why they’re there. In fact, if you ask the average college student why they go to college, you’ll get an answer along the lines of “I want a job” or “because my parents told me so”. This lack of purpose is evident in colleges all over the country.

3. Hatred for Higher Education

Because most students grew up with an idealistic perception of colleges, they’re in for some serious disillusionment as soon as the first semester kicks off. In fact, most students are so disappointed with the state of things in colleges that they develop an outright hatred for higher education.

While every student loves partying and socializing with their friends, the mere thought of an 8 AM lecture or an overdue assignment can trigger anxiety in even the sharpest of college students!

4. Deteriorating Mental Health:

It’s no secret that the mental health of college students has been deteriorating for a long time. The overbearing pressure to compete on every front and excel in every course on their curriculum is enough to trigger anxiety and depression in these young adults who are only trying to improve their lives.

5. One Size Fits All Mentality:

By far the worst thing about colleges is the one size fits all mentality that they propagate. All students take standardized tests that quantify something as unique and unquantifiable as intelligence.

Furthermore, only the students who do well in these tests can expect decent-paying jobs once they graduate as their peers who don’t get good grades are (generally perceived to be) doomed to mediocrity for the rest of their lives!

An Alternative to Traditional Colleges:

It’s because of these reasons (and countless others) that we’re strong advocates of online classes. These classes allow students the flexibility to attend lectures at their leisure which ensures that they can prioritize things which are much more important than a college education (like their mental health, for starters!)
